The best show to watch when you are bored is The Bear on Hulu. Start with season 1, episode 1 — it's 28 minutes, it moves like a car crash, and by minute ten you'll forget you were bored in the first place. That's the whole test for boredom TV. Does it grab your neck in the first act, or does it politely ask for your patience while a British detective walks around a moor? If it asks for patience, close the tab. Below are 12 shows ranked by how fast they solve the problem of an empty Tuesday. I've included starter episodes for each so you can bail in 40 minutes if I'm wrong.
One note before we go. Boredom is not the same as depression, insomnia, being sick on the couch, or getting dumped last Thursday. I tried to cover each of those moods with at least one pick. If you're specifically hungover, skip to number four.
Must-Watch Tier
The Bear (2022, 4 seasons, Hulu)
Carmy comes home to Chicago to run his dead brother's Italian beef shop and immediately starts screaming at everyone. That's the show. Starter: S1E1, "System." It's under 30 minutes and it's the best pilot of the decade. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Uncut Gems, yes; if you want to relax, absolutely not, this show is a panic attack with a soundtrack. Time: 38 episodes, roughly 30–40 min each. Four weekends if you're normal, one weekend if you're me. Status: ongoing, season 5 confirmed. Why it works right now: boredom is a low-grade hum. The Bear replaces the hum with pure adrenaline. It's the closest thing on TV to being shaken awake.
🏆 DROP EVERYTHING
Severance (2022, 2 seasons, Apple TV+)
Office workers get a chip in their brain that splits their consciousness in two — one for work, one for life. Then things get weird. Starter: S1E1. Do not skip the pilot, the show is a mystery box and it starts building traps immediately. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Lost back when Lost still had your trust, yes; if you want answers in the first hour, no. Time: 19 episodes, 45–60 min. Under 20 hours total. Status: ongoing, season 3 in production. Why it works right now: boredom is your brain asking for a puzzle. Severance is a puzzle inside a puzzle inside an Adam Scott performance that will make you rethink Adam Scott.
🏆 DROP EVERYTHING
The Rehearsal (2022, 2 seasons, HBO Max)
Nathan Fielder helps regular people rehearse hard life conversations by building full-scale replicas of restaurants, apartments, and eventually entire towns. Season 2 is about aviation safety. Trust me. Starter: S1E1, "Orange Juice, No Pulp." If you're not on board by the end of the pilot you'll never be. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if Nathan For You was your favorite show, yes; if you require a laugh track to know when something's funny, no. Time: 12 episodes, roughly 45 min. A long weekend. Status: season 2 aired in 2025, no word on season 3. Why it works right now: the show slowly convinces you that you are also being rehearsed. That's a great feeling when you're bored.
🏆 DROP EVERYTHING
Worth Your Time Tier
Task (2025, 1 season, HBO Max)
Brad Ingelsby, the guy who wrote Mare of Easttown, wrote another prestige crime show set in a depressed corner of Pennsylvania. Mark Ruffalo is a priest-turned-FBI agent. Tom Pelphrey plays a garbage man robbing drug houses. It's very good. Starter: S1E1, then commit through episode 3 — that's where it locks in. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Mare, obviously yes; if you need California sunshine to enjoy television, no, this show is grey. Time: 7 episodes, roughly 60 min. Two nights. Status: limited series, ended, no cliffhanger nonsense. Why it works right now: it's a complete story you can finish before Monday. Boredom hates a cliffhanger.
✅ WORTH IT
Poker Face (2023, 2 seasons, Peacock)
Natasha Lyonne is a human lie detector who drifts across America solving one murder per episode. Rian Johnson made it. It's a Columbo homage and it's proud of it. Starter: S1E1. If Lyonne's voice grates on you by the end of the pilot, the show is not for you and it never will be. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Knives Out, yes; if you want serialized mystery-box storytelling, no, every episode resets. Time: 22 episodes, 55 min each. Perfect one-a-night for three weeks. Status: ongoing, renewed for season 3. Why it works right now: self-contained episodes are the ideal format for bored brain. No homework, no recap needed, just a dead body and Natasha Lyonne squinting.
✅ WORTH IT
Slow Horses (2022, 4 seasons, Apple TV+)
Gary Oldman plays a farting alcoholic MI5 boss who runs a department of screwups the agency wants to fire but can't. Every season is six episodes and a full spy plot. It's the most consistent show on television right now and almost nobody talks about it. Starter: S1E1. The first season is the weakest and it's still great, so if you like it, you love the rest. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, yes; if you can't follow British accents, get subtitles or bounce. Time: 24 episodes, 45 min. Each season is a 4.5-hour movie. Status: ongoing, seasons 5 and 6 already in the can. Why it works right now: it respects your time. Six episodes, plot resolves, you feel like you finished something. Boredom cure.
✅ WORTH IT
Reservation Dogs (2021, 3 seasons, Hulu)
Four teenagers on an Oklahoma reservation try to get to California. Then it becomes something else entirely. Sterlin Harjo wrote and ran it and the whole thing feels like a miracle. Starter: S1E1. If you're still unsure by episode 3, hang on till S1E6, "Hunting," which is the best half-hour of TV from the last five years. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Atlanta, yes; if you need every scene to advance a plot, no, this show wanders on purpose. Time: 28 episodes, roughly 30 min. Under 15 hours. Status: ended clean after 3 seasons, no dangling threads. Why it works right now: it's warm without being saccharine. When you're bored and slightly sad, warm is the correct temperature.
✅ WORTH IT
Fleabag (2016, 2 seasons, Prime Video)
Phoebe Waller-Bridge plays a woman in London who talks to the camera and is falling apart. Season 2 introduces the Hot Priest and becomes one of the great romances of the century. Twelve episodes total. Starter: S1E1. It's 24 minutes. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Sex and the City but wished it were smart and sad, yes; if breaking the fourth wall irritates you, no. Time: 12 episodes, 25 min. A single Saturday. Status: ended, and Waller-Bridge has said no more. Believe her. Why it works right now: bored-and-a-little-broken is Fleabag's exact wavelength. If you're the person who searched this at 11pm on a Sunday, this is your show. Also worth grabbing (the screenplay on Amazon) if you fall in love, which you will.
🏆 DROP EVERYTHING
Background TV Tier (fold laundry, half-watch, thank me)
The Diplomat (2023, 3 seasons, Netflix)
Keri Russell is the U.S. ambassador to the U.K. and her husband is Rufus Sewell being a menace. It's an airport novel with a Netflix budget. Starter: S1E1. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked The West Wing but wished it were hornier, yes; if you need actual geopolitical realism, no, this show is a soap. Time: 24 episodes, 50 min. A week of nights. Status: ongoing, season 3 dropped fall 2025. Why it works right now: you can look at your phone for five minutes and pick it right back up. Perfect boredom TV. Requires zero effort and rewards you with fake power-couple fights.
🛋️ BACKGROUND TV
Only Murders in the Building (2021, 5 seasons, Hulu)
Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez solve a murder in their Upper West Side apartment building. Every season, new murder, same building. It should have ended after season 2 and nobody at Hulu can stop making it. Starter: S1E1, and honestly you can stop after season 2 with no regrets. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you like a cozy murder podcast vibe, yes; if you want stakes, no. Time: 50 episodes, 35 min. Endless supply. Status: ongoing, season 6 confirmed. Steve Martin will do this until he cannot physically stand. Why it works right now: the show is a warm bath. Nothing bad happens to you while you watch it. Boredom's greatest enemy is discomfort, and this show has none.
🛋️ BACKGROUND TV
The Great British Bake Off (2010, 15+ seasons, Netflix)
British amateurs bake cakes in a tent. Nobody is mean. Paul Hollywood shakes their hand if they do a good job. Starter: any season, but the 2015 collection (season 6 in the U.S.) is peak. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you're sick on the couch or hungover, yes; if you need conflict to stay engaged, no, the villain here is a soggy bottom. Time: hundreds of hours. Effectively infinite. Status: ongoing forever. Why it works right now: this is the medical-grade boredom solution. It has been prescribed by every friend who has ever texted "what should I watch, I feel like garbage." There's no need to argue with them.
🛋️ BACKGROUND TV
Only-For-Fans Tier
From (2022, 3 seasons, MGM+ / Prime Video via MGM+ channel)
A town in the middle of nowhere. Nobody can leave. Monsters come out at night. It's Lost without the pretension, and Harold Perrineau is somehow in it, closing the loop. Starter: S1E1. If the pilot doesn't hook you, nothing later will. Who'll love it, who'll bounce: if you liked Lost or The Mist, yes; if you demand answers, no, this show is a mystery-box factory and half the answers never come. Time: 30 episodes, 55 min. A serious commitment. Status: ongoing, season 4 confirmed. Not cancelled, don't panic. Why it works right now: genuine dread is a great palate cleanser for boredom. You will not be bored watching From. You may be annoyed. Never bored.
✅ WORTH IT
Skip List (spare you the click)
A few honorable non-mentions, briefly. Emily in Paris is what you watch when even Bake Off feels too demanding — it's fine, it's fluff, you deserve better but I'm not your dad. The Night Agent is Netflix's boredom-industrial complex working as designed, algorithmically inoffensive, forgettable inside a week. Both slot in the same bucket.
🐍 SLOP (both of them, and yes I linked them together on purpose)
FAQ
What's the best show to binge in one weekend when you are bored?
Fleabag. Twelve episodes, 25 minutes each, five hours total. You can start Saturday morning and be crying at Andrew Scott by Sunday night. If you want something longer, Slow Horses season 1 is six episodes and delivers a full spy plot without asking for a second weekend.
What should I watch when I'm bored and can't focus on anything?
Poker Face or Only Murders in the Building. Both are one-and-done episodes with no serialized plot to track, so you can miss ten minutes checking your phone and lose nothing. If even that's too much work, Great British Bake Off requires no brain cells whatsoever.
What's a good short show to watch when you're bored?
Fleabag (12 episodes total), Reservation Dogs (28 half-hour episodes), and Task (7 hours total) all fit the bill. Anything under 15 hours qualifies as short in the streaming era. Avoid anything advertised as "epic" or "sprawling." That's code for 90 hours of your life.
What show should I watch when I'm bored AND sad?
Reservation Dogs or Fleabag. Both understand sadness without wallowing in it, and both are funny enough to pull you a few inches back toward normal. Skip anything true-crime — it feels productive in the moment but leaves you worse afterward. Trust me on this one.
What to watch tonight
Open Hulu. Play The Bear, season 1, episode 1. Twenty-eight minutes. If you're not locked in by the end of that pilot, come back and try Fleabag S1E1 on Prime Video. Between those two you've spent under an hour testing whether prestige TV can beat your boredom, and if neither one works you're not bored — you're depressed, and no show is going to fix that. Call somebody.
